Final Evaluation

My 3D sculpture piece is a cubist style head. I have used pine, plywood, dowel, driftwood, ink and acrylic. I used the pine as the main structure of the head as it is quite a solid wood and would allow me to carve into it without it being to brittle. I used Driftwood for the facial features, hair and as detailing on the plinth, I used driftwood because it has a very earthy look to it and represents my use of nature as inspiration in my artwork. The plywood and dowel were to simply create a plinth for my sculpture to stand on. I used the ink and acrylic to drip over my face creating an abstract effect and I feel this worked really well.

I haven't used much colour on my piece however the colour I have used is in an effective way, the wood is very natural however the drips of dark red and black show my personality through the piece. The shape of my sculpture is very abstract due to the carving and sanding I have done to create the face shape, I use a lot of abstract shapes and designs in my work and I feel this portrays that well as this is based on identity. The miss matched pieces of driftwood all over the piece create an effect of unsteadiness which is how I feel my life is like, a little bit all over the place. My sculpture also looks a little tribal. Cubism piece are often inspired by primitive art, many famous artists use African Tribes and art to create famous pieces in cubism.

The messages I wanted to portray is that nature is a lot like a human life, it can be unsteady and a bit all over the place and eventually it does end however the journey along the way is beautiful and full of surprises. I feel like at looking at the piece you wouldn’t necessarily get that message but with an explanation of the piece and what it's about you can start to see it in a different way. The drips of colour are there to show that everyone has their own personality even if we are all the same in a way, it's what you put in your life and the things you like and do that create your own identity.

As I had to change my design idea to accommodate how difficult the carving was it hasn’t fully ended up as I intended. My original design idea was to create the face carving out the wood to create the features however it was extremely difficult and time consuming. I am happy with how the piece has ended up however If I was able to create a nice carved face instead of using driftwood for the features then I would have been happier. I still feel that the sculpture represents myself well and has been a success with the meaning behind it.

I am not too happy on the face shape in general as the chin is to long however it helps to create an even more surreal and abstract piece. If I was to do it again I would also have got more driftwood so I could make the hair longer as it would then represent myself more.
