Mid-Point Evaluation
The materials I have used for my 3D portrait sculpture are pine wood, driftwood, melted wax, and ink along with hot glue and wood glue to assemble it together. The reason I have chosen wood to created my piece is because it’s a natural resource and I like to use nature as an inspiration in my artwork. The ink and melted wax will be in the colours black and red because they are my favourite colours.
Michelle Dickson was a big influence on my 3D sculpture as she likes using the natural resources of driftwood to create her pieces. I have also used Picasso as an inspiration because I like the way he uses cubism in his work. Cubism is a style type I often use in my artwork whether that be a painting or a 3D piece which is why I decided to portray this in my sculpture.
The most difficult thing for me is carving into wood as I have not done anything like this previously before. My design piece showed a piece of wood with the face carved out and driftwood as hair however while doing this I decided that carving all the features into the wood would be extremely difficult. I started the carving to get the basic shapes but even with this it was difficult to see what it was. To overcome this, I then added pieces of driftwood to the features making them more noticeable and stand out.
My strengths I have showed so far are that I have been able to source my own materials, the design process showed a particular design for my piece and using this I was able to collect everything I needed for it. I have also learned a new skill while creating my sculpture which was carving into wood. I found this process and skill very difficult and decided to change my design slightly however it was a good skill to learn and practice for the future.
To finish my sculpture I still need to make a plinth. To do this I will attach a piece of dowel to a block of wood to stand my sculpture up. Once I have done this I will then attach the driftwood using hot glue to the head for hair. I may use the left over drift wood on the plinth to create a more urban effect depending how much driftwood is left over. To add a little extra I think I may add drips of ink and red wax through the hair. This is because red and black are my favourite colours so it makes the sculpture even more personal to me.
