Communication skills are key in a variety of different situations. Most interactions in work or home based situations include communication which allows ideas and thoughts to be known effectively. Communication can be shown through reading, writing, speaking and listening, so it is key that these skills are well developed. Having good communication skills will help in every day life but also in advancing onto careers.
To communicate well I ensure that my speech and diction are clear which ensures that the other person can hear me well and clearly. For other people to understand me I make sure I speak face to face with them which allows for a more successful conversation. When communicating on paper I make sure my sentences make sense and that I use correct grammar and punctuation to get my point across effectively.
When listening to someone else I listen closely and take on board all that is said so that I can respond effectively and within the subject matter.
Communicating to an audience, especially a larger one, Is key when presenting an idea, proposal or subject. To ensure the audience fully understands the point you are trying to get across, you need to use the correct posture, tone and projection. An open posture with your head up facing the audience will be far more successful that a closed posture with your head down. Tone is key with communicating as it shows the audience the energy and emotion of the subject matter. A tone with no energy and enthusiasm will cause the audience to stop listening and focussing. A tone with a good energy draws in the attention of the audience and has a much more successful outcome. Projection is important when communicating as you need to project your voice so it can be heard but wit shouting as this can seem aggressive. A quiet voice will also cause the audience to stop listening as they are unable to hear you.
Communication skills are important to help develop my career in the art and design industry. With me being in college I will need to apply for universities at the end of the year which will require many types of communication skills. These skills also apply when applying for jobs. To secure an interview for either a job or university you must create a well written application letter which communicates your abilities and personality well. Once an interview is secure, the interview stage requires spoken communication using a well-mannered, well-spoken tone to sell yourself effectively.
